Origin
The innermost layer of the mussel shell consists of mother-of-pearl. When a foreign body penetrates the mussel, it is surrounded by mantle tissue. The mussel protects itself and deposits nacre around the foreign body: a pearl is formed. Of more than 10,000 mussel species worldwide, only a few can produce pearls at all. And only a fraction of these end up on the market as jewelry pearls.
